  44. (atari.archive.umich.edu) where you can ftp all of our freeware programs, just

  51. DC Drop DTR will drop the computer's RS232 DTR line for one second,
  52. then reassert the line.  This should hangup any modem which is
  53. connected.  Program suggested by James Faircloth.

  166. I would love to purchase the NEC 3D, but the monitor is $550.00, I just don't
  167. wish to spend that much on a monitor that is interlaced at 1024x768.
  168. I wonder what would .28mm do? the SONY 1304 HG is .25mm, if it only works
  169. with a simple adjustment, I wouldn't mind as much, but just needed to know
  170. if it is going to run with it.
  171. TO HOWARD CHU, didn't you have a Panasync 1391?  Did this monitor work
  172. for both modes? (.31 mm I believe.)

  204. You are correct.  I was assuming that cfg_ch was available to all C
  205. libraries.  Getch() and Putch() are commonly available it seems, but I
  206. only heard about cfg_ch in this newsgroup.  In general though, I still
  207. think that the second method would be more compatible than the first,
  208. since it doesn't access the system directly by skipping over the library.

  235. I asked Bob Brodie a similar question on Compuserve a while ago, coming
  236. at it from a different angle, and got a fairly clear reply. I asked what
  237. the differences were between TOS 1.60 and 1.62, and he stated that there
  238. were exactly two differences:

  367. The most powerful package is Uniterm, available free from
  368. atari.archive.umich.edu.  The easiest to use is Flash 1.6, from Antic (
  369. I use both.  There is also STalker, which has seen some good reviews here on
  370. the net (I have not seen/used this one).  I really like the user interface
  371. that Flash provides, but it does not include Kermit.  For those occasions
  372. when I need this capability, I use Uniterm.

  401.         As far as the STacy is concerned:
  402. The LCD display bites. The backlight is too low and the screen has a
  403. really bad ghosting problem. Also there is a big problem with hatching
  404. on the screen when diplaying large dark areas.
  405.  
  406. The trackball is O.K., but sticks now and then, and the buttons are in a
  407. very inconvenient place, making the ball thumb oriented, not index
  408. finger based, which is difficult to controll, as well as bad for your
  409. hand.
  410.  
  411. The keyboard is O.K., but the numberpad and functionkeys are too small,
  412. which is unacceptable when you see all the extra space on the keyboard.
  413.  
  414. It weighs over 15 pounds, which makes it as a real pain in the ass to
  415. transport.
  416.  
  417. THERE IS NO INTERNAL BATTERY, AND NO FACILITIES TO INCORPORATE ONE.
  418. TOTALLY UNACCEPTALBE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  420. The case design is shoddy, and some of the things that are touted as
  421. features are really just a pain in the ass, such as the port cover on
  422. the back. It is supposed to operate as a stand when open, but always
  423. slams shut while you are typing, and everyone I know who has one has
  424. just taken it off entirely.

  426. No blitter, not even a socket.
  427.  
  428. Well, my suggestion is to skiop the STacy and the Mac luggable, and go
  429. with the ST Book, or the new Mac PowerBook, which will be out in
  430. October. At least these have a battery!!!!!!!!!!!!

  443.      My internal floppy drive on my stock 1040 seems to slow down and stop
  444. when trying to read some disks (3M brand always) and does fine on other
  445. disks (Sony).  Any suggestions?  I did open up the case and tried to clean
  446. out the spindle - are there any safe/recommended ways to lubricate it?

  477. text and binary files. if there are diffs available (are there?)
  478. you might try adding a "-o output_file" rather than using stdout.
  479. make sure you open this "wb" in the ppmtogif code.
  480. most shells cannot/do not make stdout binary mode.

  577. I heard a fair bit about Atari's new control panel, XCONTROL. I've even
  578. come accros some programs that require it (eg. DC MouseMeter). However, I
  579. haven't been able to find it; if any one either knows where I can get it,

  609. I have a new model Atari mouse (identified by a circular ball door and large
  610. teflon sleeves on the rollers) that has withstood 3 years of hard use without
  611. a problem.  I agree that the previous mouse designs sucked (those with the
  612. bare metal bars).  All after-market mice that I have seen for the ST have
  613. a DPI rating that makes it very easy to overload the ST mouse scanning
  614. hardware (that is, the DPI is too high).  Others have disagreed with this
  615. in a previous thread, just MHO.
